Our Services

About us

In April 1956, a team of delegates from the church council, including Rev. Friis, Rev. Marais, and Messrs. L.J. Loock, R.J. Veldtman, I.J.v.d.M. Burger, and A. Barnardo, attended a CMR Christian Social Council) meeting in George. Following this visit, the church council unanimously decided in 1957 to support the George branch with an annual contribution of 50 Pounds and to establish a sisters’ league. Later that year, Rev. Marais updated the council on the impactful work of the George social worker, which led to the decision to appoint Knysna’s own social worker. Corrie Franzsen was appointed in 1957 and promptly presented her first report on her activities in Knysna, Karatara, and McLachlan in September of that year.

Since then, numerous social workers, alongside administrative officers, have served Knysna, providing crucial support to the community. One of the most impactful social workers was Vera Steyn, wife of Rev. David Steyn, who left a lasting legacy in both the church and the broader community. While the CMR has since undergone a name change, transitioning to Family Care Services, it continues to serve the same regions with dedication.

Today, Family Care Services’ caseload varies each month, but their reach extends across Knysna Village, Concordia, Karatara, and Hornlee, ensuring that these communities are continually supported through various social programs and initiatives.
