Loeriehof: From Humble Beginnings to a Pillar of Support for the Elderly

Loeriehof Old Age Home’s origins can be traced back to the early 1960’s when the Dutch Reformed Church in Knysna saw the growing need for a facility to care for the elderly in the local community. Discussions around this need became a priority in 1963, with official plans taking shape by January 1967. By March 1969, the vision was realised with the opening of Loeriehof in Rio Street, Upper Knysna. Inaugurated later that year, the home was established through the efforts of church members, Rev. H. Kuyler and I.S. Kellerman, with community support and governmental collaboration.

In the late 1970s, plans to expand Loeriehof’s services for the frail elderly began. Initially, a new location outside Knysna was considered, but the idea was abandoned in favor of a more central site in the town. By 1985, thanks to fundraising efforts led by Cassie Lamprecht and the community, a new facility in Graham Street was completed. Residents moved into the new home on 1 June 1985, with the official opening ceremony conducted on 15 November 1985 by the then-state president, Mr. P.W. Botha.

Further growth occurred in 1998 when the Good Hope Housing Company purchased an additional property near Loeriehof to accommodate more elderly residents. The building, previously used by a school board, was renovated and established as “Skoolhuis” in August 1998, continuing Loeriehof’s legacy of providing quality care and housing for Knysna’s elderly community.

For the past 55 years, Loeriehof has been a pillar of support in the Knysna community, offering compassionate care and housing for the elderly, frail, and vulnerable. The facility can accommodate up to 75 residents, with 40 in frail care, 18 in assisted living, and 17 in independent living. Additionally, the Skoolhuis provides sub-economic housing for 7 elderly residents, further extending Loeriehof’s commitment to those in need.
